Renovating your home can get expensive. If you would like to have a go at DIY home renovations, here are some tips, tricks and ideas to help you out.

Think Things Through

Don’t just start a home renovation project without first thinking it through thoroughly. Do you know someone who has had an unfinished home renovation project sitting dormant? That’s probably because they started very enthusiastically without a plan, and then either lost enthusiasm or met a challenge they could not solve by themselves.

Know Your Capabilities

By deciding on a project and then fully researching and planning what you will do, you will save yourself not being able to finish it. Because by researching the project, you will be able to decide, based on the skills, time and money required if you alone will be able to complete it.

Decide on a Style

Along with researching your project and capabilities, you also need to completely decide on what style your renovation will be in. This doesn’t just refer to interior decorating. If you are doing a more major project, such as a house addition, you will need to decide if you are going to keep it inline with the current design, or if you are going to add something different. Otherwise, you may end up with an unfortunate mash-up of designs if you change your mind half-way through.

Home renovation is a cost-effective and fulfilling way of updating your home to meet your needs. Proper planning will help you to complete the project in the way that you want.

Basic Landscaping Techniques

Landscaping is a great way to spruce up your home. It gives it effective curb appeal and can even add value if you are thinking of selling.

Many people steer clear of landscaping under the misconception that it can cost a lot of money, or that a professional should do it. As with anything around the home, with some basic knowledge under your belt you can do just as good a job as a professional.

Here are some basic landscaping techniques to get you started.

  • Search the internet and gardening magazines and compile a folder (physical or on your computer) of gardens you like. You can like the entire garden or just one aspect of it. If it’s just one thing you like, make sure you include a note with the picture.
  • Once you feel you have enough pictures, sit down and work out exactly what you like and want. When you do this, be mindful of the space you are working with and other factors, such as money.
  • Next, draw up a plan of where things will go in your garden. You don’t have to draw well, but try to keep things realistic. When you are drawing up your plan, be mindful of geographical features. Is the ground uneven? Does water collect in a corner of the yard where you were thinking of putting a garden chair? Keep such things in mind when designing your garden.

Landscaping isn’t just for those with lots of cash. Give it a go yourself!
